Myths and legends are often dark and instructive. The story of the Pied Piper of Hamelin, too, tells of loss, power, and the lack of recognition of art.
Hamelin, 1284:
The city is suffering from a devastating rat infestation. A mysterious man in colorful clothes promises help – in exchange for payment. With his flute, he leads the vermin to their doom. But when the agreed-upon payment is refused, the story takes a gruesome turn.
He returns in revenge—and this time lures 130 children out of the town with his music. Only two of them survive. To this day, the street through which the children left Hamelin is considered a place where music may no longer be played.
The composer Otto M. Schwarz has set this famous legend to music as an impressive work for brass band.
