Borgia – Power, Intrigue and the Sound of Damnation
Corruption, poisonings, incest, and power games in the Vatican: Hardly any other family is as closely linked to the dark side of the Renaissance as the Borgias . To this day, their name stands for unrestrained abuse of power—captured in the infamous "black legend," a mixture of historical facts and devilishly fascinating exaggeration.
The focus is on Pope Alexander VI , born Rodrigo Borgia, whose pontificate is one of the most scandalous in church history. His election in 1492 was marked by bribery, blackmail, and nepotism. A pope who made his sons cardinals, had political opponents poisoned, and fought with brutal determination to maintain his family's hold on power.
Contemporary witnesses described his death as demonic: The devil himself appeared in his death chamber, accompanied by a black dog that haunted the corridors of the Vatican. The Catholic Church stood on the brink—between divine aspirations and human abyss.
Nepotism, poison and the sound of the Last Judgement
Cesare Borgia, appointed cardinal against his will; Giulia Farnese, the Pope's lover, whose brother Alessandro was elevated to the rank of cardinal in return – the Borgia dynasty practiced politics as a family affair. Critics like Savonarola paid for their resistance with their lives. Yet Alexander VI clung to power – through calculation, flexibility, and ruthless violence.
In the second movement of this work, a musical warning arises: the medieval hymn "Dies Irae" – Day of Wrath – pervades the composition like a biblical shadow. A soundscape oscillating between threat and reckoning, in which history and music merge into an ominous unity.
