"Iron Mountain" presents the legend of the Erzberg (Ore Mountain) in Upper Styria in a striking musical way. At the beginning, the atmosphere of the grotto where the water sprite lives is brought to life by simulated drops of water. The water sprite is pursued and captured by humans. In his distress, he begs for freedom and makes the humans an offer: gold mines for one year, silver mines for ten years, or iron mines forever. The humans' clear answer is: iron forever. The finale of the composition underscores this decision with impressive anvil blows, and the Erzberg rises triumphantly to the center of the action.
