IN NOMINE – The history of Wadgassen Abbey as musical inspiration

How often in history has justification, blessing, or even war been waged "in the name of..."? This question runs through the history of many religious communities—including that of the Premonstratensian Abbey of Wadgassen.

Founded in the 12th century under the motto "Desertum florebit quasi lilium," the abbey grew from a barren moorland into one of the most influential institutions in Saarland. The seven liberal arts were taught here, including music—a symbol of education and culture. But the dark side is also part of the history: social hardship, famine, and witch trials. Even ecstatic dances accompanied by music were considered "the work of the devil" and often ended tragically.

In 1789, the French Revolution brought about a revolution. Troops stormed the monastery, destroying organs, icons, and the region's cultural center. Abbot Bordier fled—a nearly 700-year-old tradition came to an abrupt end.

And yet something new emerged: a glassworks was built on the foundations, a symbol of change and hope. This dramatic story of rise, splendor, destruction, and new beginnings continues to inspire today—and finds its echo in music.
