In the 16th century, Lille belonged to Spanish-ruled Flanders, ruled first by Charles V and later by Philip II. The region was marked by civil wars, struggles for independence, and religious conflicts. Philip II persecuted Protestants, who were referred to as heretics and derogatorily as "the wretched."

On August 15, 1566, an uprising broke out in the region, resulting in widespread looting. On December 26 of the same year, around 400 "wretches" attacked Wattrelos and barricaded themselves in the cemetery and church the following day. The Catholic population set fire to the church; many of the "wretches" burned to death or fled. Some managed to escape with the help of the locals.

Even today, Wattrelos commemorates these events every September with the "Berlouffes" festival. Dolls are thrown from the church tower and a large doll is symbolically burned.
