Fragments – Concertino for Trombone and Orchestra
“Fragments” is a powerful, energetic concertino for trombone, rich in timbre and characterized by two central motifs that are broken down into fragments and further processed in a variety of ways.
After an imposing introduction, the soloist introduces the slightly playful main motif, which expands over the course of the composition with jazzy elements without losing its contemporary character. The last three notes of the introductory motif appear repeatedly—sometimes as a short, sharp signal, sometimes as a lyrical line. This contrast between leggero and marcato lends the work a special vibrancy.
A continuous ostinato that runs through all registers provides constant drive and acts as a common thread that connects the individual sections.
“Fragments” was commissioned by the Luxembourg Ministry of Culture in cooperation with the De klenge Maarnicher Festival and was selected as a compulsory piece for the final round of the 1st Michel Becquet International Trombone Competition .
