The Old Fortress of Luxembourg – Overture for the National Day
The Old Fortress of Luxembourg was commissioned by the Luxembourg Ministry of Culture and was composed as a celebratory overture to the official ceremony of Luxembourg's National Day.
The inspiration lies less in a historical chronicle than in the impressive architecture of the fortress Lucilinburhuc , also known as the "Gibraltar of the North." Over 1,000 years of history are reflected in its striking structures: the Rock of Gibraltar, the crypt, the kilometer-long casemates, and the Holy Spirit Citadel.
Musically realized by:
-
radiant fanfare sounds as a symbol of strength and defensiveness,
-
rhythmic orchestral movements for dynamics and liveliness,
-
patriotic choral sounds for dignity and solidarity,
-
as well as dark sound paintings that hint at the secrets of the underground fortress.
An optional highlight is the use of a choir , supported by a boys' choir , which interprets the newly set third verse of the Luxembourg national anthem - thus giving the work an additional dimension of patriotic grandeur.
