Surprise! The "Scholl - Die Knospe der weissen Rose" is not Sophie Scholl. It is her brother Hans. He carries the seed of the future resistance group within him and will bring it to fruition. In Titus Hoffmann and Thomas Borchers' musical, Sophie is not the focus. Here – as in reality – she is involved, but Hans Scholl, Alexander (Shurik) Schmorell, and Traute Lafrenz are more important. Added to these are Inge Scholl, Freddy, and Ulla. The musical is about their romantic entanglements and the origin of the "White Rose." A ski tour by the seven young people to the Coburger Hütte in Tyrol did indeed take place around the turn of the year 1941/42. In the snowed-in, isolated ski hut, they are left to their own devices, and their emotions are swirling: Sophie sticks with her boyfriend Fritz, but as a professional officer, he is often at the front, and he also had an affair with someone else. Shurik's "ladylove" Angelika is married and lives in Northern Germany. Inge hopes that the family friend Ernst Reden will marry her. But he loves boys and men and would only enter into a sham marriage with her. In 1935/36, Hans had a homosexual relationship for more than a year with a boy from his youth group. For him, this Rolf was his "great love." A romance that connected Traute and Hans in the summer of 1941 broke up after a few weeks; yet the young student remained close to the Scholl family. In these emotional whirlpools, only one thing is certain: the soul connection between Hans and Shurik. It will be the basis of the leaflets. Without Hans, the "White Rose" would not have existed, but only with Alexander did the first four writings succeed. (Sophie only became significantly active with the last two leaflets.) In the ski hut, Shurik is not physically present, but he is present in Hans' thoughts, and they exchange ideas. The young people are united by "the search for something higher." What is it worth burning for, being a "flame" for? The theatergoer can accompany them on this journey, full of emotion. A musical is entertainment, not a documentary, but to be credible, the play should not contradict the facts. The authors have succeeded in balancing show and reality. Despite all artistic freedom and imagination, the play remains close to history. It is a successful poetic approach: This is how the seven could have thought and felt. The strength of the performance also lies in the fact that it does not show future brave freedom fighters, but people who simply want to be happy despite a deeply dark time – not superior heroes, but still seekers. The audience is encouraged to stand by themselves and to stand up for freedom – also for the freedom of those who think differently. Dr. Robert M. Zoske The author is a theologian and historian. He has written several books about the "White Rose." His latest book, "Die Weiße Rose – Geschichte, Menschen, Vermächtnis" (The White Rose – History, People, Legacy), was published in 2023 in the C.H.Beck series "Wissen".
