Leonardo - Concert Band Set

Leonardo - Concert Band Set

Leonardo is a symphonic work for wind orchestra dedicated to the work and thought of Leonardo da Vinci (1452–1519) – one of the greatest universal geniuses in human history. As a painter, sculptor, inventor, scientist, and visionary, Leonardo combined art and technology in a unique way. His curiosity, creativity, and joy of experimentation continue to inspire today.

The composition reflects central facets of his personality and his work: The musical themes oscillate between monumental sonic splendor, playful lightness, intellectual depth, and a mystical atmosphere. Motifs reminiscent of sketches, flight experiments, or mechanical constructions alternate with quiet passages evoking his artistic side—such as the "Mona Lisa" or the "Vitruvian Man."

Leonardo wrote down his thoughts in countless notebooks—the so-called codices—often in mirror writing and in many languages. Many of these manuscripts are now considered lost, but around 6,000 pages have survived and document his quest for an encyclopedia of knowledge. This depth and complexity is also reflected in his music.

The work is ideally suited for modern symphonic wind orchestras wishing to create thematic programs. "Leonardo" by Otto M. Schwarz opens up space for sound, history, and reflection—a musical homage to one of the most important thinkers in world history.
