Dreamcatcher – a musical dreamscape for fanfare band
Long ago in the northern regions of America, a mother from the Ojibwa tribe was worried about her daughter, who was repeatedly haunted by dark nightmares. In search of help, she turned to the Spider Woman, Asibikaashi, who watched over the children of the land. She wove a magical web from a bent willow branch and sacred threads—leaving an opening in the center so that good dreams could pass through, while the bad ones would be caught in the net. Adorned with sacred feathers and touched by the first rays of sunlight, the bad dreams would dissolve into fine stardust.
This work for fanfare band draws on familiar dream imagery: the sensation of flying, encounters with a deceased person, and the typical chase in which the legs feel heavy and unresponsive. Yet, as with the dreamcatcher, everything dissolves in the light of morning—leaving behind only the gentle calm of awakening.
