What defines a person? Outward beauty, inner qualities—or a balance of both? Everyone has probably asked themselves this question, and the answer remains as difficult as it is subjective. This work also revolves around this timeless theme.
The story centers on the 17th-century novel character Cyrano de Bergerac , a poet and soldier—and famous for both his sharp mind and his large nose. Cyrano loves the beautiful Roxane, but is convinced his feelings will never be reciprocated. Roxane, on the other hand, falls in love with the cadet Christian de Neuvillette , who, although handsome, is described as simple-minded. In Christian's name, Cyrano composes passionate love poems in an attempt to win Roxane's heart.
But the rivalry is inevitable: the married Count Guiche also desires Roxane. When she finally marries Christian, the jealous Guiche sends the two men – Cyrano and Christian, who serve in the Gascon Cadet Regiment – to the front. There, after months of fighting, they find themselves on a suicide mission.
Shortly before the decisive battle, Roxane confesses to her husband that she no longer loves him for his outward beauty, but for his supposed inner greatness. Christian realizes that it is, in fact, Cyrano's words that have won her heart. He demands that his friend reveal the truth to Roxane. But Cyrano remains silent—and Christian falls in battle.
Decades later, Cyrano, scarred by the war, visits Roxane in the convent where she has lived since her husband's death. Only there does he confess his love to her and reveal the true authorship of the letters. Cyrano eventually dies in Roxane's arms.
