The Crossover Suite No. 1 consists of five stylistically very different movements.
1. INTRODUCTION : A lively introduction leads us into a bass groove on the baritone saxophone. Finger snaps and other dynamic stylistic devices contrast with rigid elements familiar from marching music.
2. VIENNESE WALTZ: A Viennese waltz in a minor key, featuring the characteristic, indispensable waltz accompaniment in the “Viennese style.”
3. ROUNDABOUT: Roundabout the “spinning top” is a rondo with recurring motifs and a resting point in the adagio section.
4. Stomps and Claps: As the name suggests, this piece involves working with hands and feet. Body percussion alternates with technically demanding passages.
5. FINALE: A fast final movement with a dolce-like middle section leads into a furious finale, featuring time changes and a few dynamic surprises. Each movement could stand alone, but played together, this suite demonstrates the diversity and possibilities of a clarinet quartet ensemble.
